Specifying healthcare doorsets is one of the most demanding challenges in construction and refurbishment. Unlike other sectors, healthcare facilities house patients who may be unable to self-evacuate, making fire compartmentalisation both a regulatory obligation and a direct factor in patient safety. Healthcare doors in hospitals, clinics, and care homes must meet strict regulatory standards while withstanding constant use, rigorous infection control requirements, and round-the-clock operational pressure. We have delivered healthcare fire door projects both directly and through Enfield Speciality Doors, our sister company within the GSP Group, across NHS trusts and private healthcare providers at all project scales.

The Premises Information Box™ (PIB) known as a SIB (secure information box), is designed to provide fast access for the Fire & Rescue Service to building plans and information. For operational use, the PIB® was developed with firefighters to an exacting specification and is a recognised focal point in the event of an incident.

The Latest Building Regulation 2010 Approved Document B for fire safety (June 2022), effective 01.12.22 and Fire Safety (England) 2022 regulations effective 23.01.23 call for secure information boxes on new build HRRBs over 11m and existing HRRBs over 18 m Information Boxes respectively.

The legislation highlights that consideration should also be given to other buildings with large, complex or uncommon layouts where the provision of secure information box may be beneficial.

What is a Healthcare Fire Door?

A healthcare fire door is a certified, fire-rated doorset specifically designed and specified for use in clinical and care environments. Unlike standard commercial fire doors, healthcare doors must meet a combination of demands that go beyond fire resistance alone, including infection control, impact durability, acoustic performance, and compatibility with hold-open and door control systems used in busy clinical settings.

In practice, a healthcare doorset is a complete assembly: a fire-rated door leaf, frame, seals, ironmongery, and any specialist hardware such as electromagnetic hold-open devices or automatic drop-down seals, all tested and certified together as a single unit. Modifying any component after manufacture can invalidate certification, which is why specification, supply, and installation should be managed by an experienced and certified manufacturer.

From ward corridors and operating theatres to GP surgeries, care homes, and mental health facilities, they are needed wherever passive fire protection is required to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

Why is Fire Safety Important in Healthcare?

Fire safety in healthcare is more critical than in almost any other sector. Healthcare facilities bring together large numbers of occupants – many of whom are immobile or dependent on life-support equipment – with complex building layouts and the continuous presence of flammable materials: medical gases, textiles, and clinical supplies.

Unlike a commercial or retail environment, a healthcare building cannot be evacuated quickly. Non-ambulant patients require staff-assisted evacuation, a process that takes significantly longer and depends on fire compartmentalisation holding for an extended period to protect both patients and the staff helping them.

Healthcare fire doors are central to this. As a key element of passive fire protection, they contain the spread of fire and smoke between compartments, keep escape routes clear, and buy critical time for safe evacuation. Doors that fail, through poor specification, incorrect installation, or inadequate maintenance, can have severe consequences in environments where evacuation cannot be rushed.

This is why fire safety regulation in healthcare is among the most stringent for any building type, and why the specification of doors for healthcare demands a level of expertise and certification that goes well beyond standard commercial applications.

Fire Safety Regulations in Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare organisations operate under some of the most stringent fire safety legislation of any sector. Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 05-01 is the primary guidance governing fire safety management in the NHS and wider healthcare settings, placing responsibility for fire precautions with the organisation’s Responsible Person.

Central to this is the correct deployment of fire-rated doors. Healthcare fire doors form a critical part of passive fire protection (PFP), compartmentalising buildings to contain fire and smoke, protect evacuation routes, and buy essential time for staff to assist patients.

Healthcare facilities must also comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, requiring regular fire risk assessments and ongoing maintenance of all physical fire precautions, fire doors for healthcare included.

Enfield healthcare doorsets are independently third-party certified and designed to meet HTM 05-01 requirements, providing confidence to NHS trusts, architects, and contractors from specification through to handover.

Why Healthcare Doors Demand Specialist Solutions

Standard commercial doors are not built for healthcare environments. Several factors make the specification of doors for healthcare fundamentally different from other sectors:

  • Durability: Ward corridors and clinical areas experience constant traffic from staff, patients, beds, and trolleys. Healthcare doorsets must withstand this daily wear without compromising integrity or certification.
  • Infection control: Door surfaces must resist chemical cleaning agents, and anti-bacterial facings provide additional protection in high-risk clinical areas.
  • Evacuation complexity: Non-ambulant patients require staff-assisted evacuation, so compartmentalisation must remain intact for longer, influencing both fire rating and door positioning.
  • Hold-open and door control: Clinical areas benefit from electromagnetic hold-open devices that release automatically when the fire alarm is activated.
  • Acoustic performance: Noise reduction between wards, consulting rooms, and recovery areas supports patient wellbeing and confidentiality.

What Does a Healthcare Doorset Include?

A healthcare doorset from Enfield is a fully specified, certified assembly rather than a standalone door leaf. Each doorset is manufactured within the scope of its fire test evidence and certification, so fire resistance and performance certification are maintained throughout the product’s lifecycle.

A typical Gerda healthcare doorset includes:

  • Fire-rated door leaf: Available in FD30, FD60, FD90, and FD120 ratings, with severe-duty core construction to withstand the constant impact of beds, trolleys, and clinical equipment in high-traffic clinical environments. Factory-fitted protection plates are available where additional face protection is required.
  • Frame: Tested as part of the doorset assembly to ensure the complete opening performs to the specified fire rating.
  • Intumescent and smoke seals: Expanding under heat to seal the door gap and prevent the passage of fire and smoke. FD30S and FD60S variants are available, providing combined fire and smoke resistance where HTM 05-01 requirements demand it.
  • Ironmongery: Hinges, latches, closers, and where required, electromagnetic hold-open devices and access control hardware, all specified to be compatible with the doorset’s fire certification. Hold-open devices release automatically on fire alarm activation, allowing free passage during normal clinical operations without compromising compartmentalisation.
  • Infection control surfaces: PVC-u clad and high-pressure laminate facings offer smooth, seamless surfaces that resist bacterial harbourage and withstand repeated cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants. Anti-bacterial facings are available for the highest-risk clinical areas, including isolation wards and treatment rooms.
  • Acoustic performance: Acoustic-rated variants provide noise reduction within a single certified doorset, removing the need for a separate acoustic specification. Relevant wherever patient rest, dignity, or confidentiality is a priority, such as wards, consulting rooms, and recovery areas especially.
  • Specialist hardware: Photoluminescent signage, automatic drop-down seals for uneven floor thresholds, heavy-duty kick plates, and impact-absorbing bumpers, specified according to the clinical environment.

All components are selected to work together as a certified assembly. Changes to any element – including ironmongery, glazing, or surface finishes – are reviewed against our primary-owned test evidence before approval, ensuring certification is never compromised.
